Festival Hair 2.0: Toronto Blogger Dainty Girl Gets Knotty with a Colourful Top Knot

What’s better than getting the inside scoop on the latest and greatest hairstyles from your favourite Toronto salon? How about our Medulla & Co. hairstylists partnering with some of your favorite bloggers, Instagrammers and street style stars all in the name of the greater (style) good?

For this collab, we teamed up our enlightened hair genius (or, as she’s otherwise know @thehairgypsy) Kelly Araujo with Nicole Wilson, better known as Dainty Girl, for Nicole’s nearly 18,000 followers on Twitter and Instagram.

Nicole is seriously stylish, and her lifestyle, fashion and beauty blog has catapulted her to stylestar status thanks to her affinity for all things feminine. If you’re looking for some major style inspo, Nicole’s blog is a deep dive into tips on elevating your classic look with some edgy embellishments. Nicole’s totally relatable story (who didn’t grow up trying to cut their own hair?!) and her commitment to supporting some of Toronto’s best and brightest local establishments (ahem, *raises hand*) made her the perfect choice to rock this classic-with-a-twist look.

Taking inspiration from Nicole’s dreamy Instagram photos, Medulla & Co.’s Queen Street stylist Kelly wanted to give Nicole a messy topknot style that perfectly suited hot summer days rocking out to your fave bands at Wayhome. “Summer festivals are just as much about your look as they are about the bands,” says Kelly. “For Nicole, I took cues from her personal style by adding an edgy yet feminine pink hair extension to her natural hair with a fishtail braid.”

Of course, the hair extensions were coloured by Carolyn (aka @frankieglitz) for glam, and are made of 100% human hair to help give that natural look – no plastic here! Makeup artist Rebecca Pilozo added some pop to Nicole’s lids and lips with a subtle pink and grey shimmer. The sheer sparkle power of the eye shadow gave us some major Jem and the Holograms vibes – what could be better for a Millennialesque summer festival? Speaking of, Nicole and the crew sipped on Junction Craft brews during the shoot to help get them in the summer festival vibe.

Their fave? The West Toronto Weizen, a beer that celebrates all things T.O. Plus, it’s brewed right in the heart of West Toronto at the Junction. By brewing with only all natural ingredients, they are truly a beer after our own holistic hearts.

The Process:

1. Gather your supplies

2. Pull your hair into a loose pony and section it into two

3. Braid each section into a fishtail braid, pulling them apart to add some extra

4. Add some texturizing powder to each fishtail braid to give them the hold you’ll need to outlast the summer sun

5. Wrap the braids into a bun and secure in place with bobby pins. Use as many as you need!

The Products:

  1. Your hands (obvi)
  2. A texturizing spray and/or powder
  3. Pre-coloured, 100% human hair extensions (you can still do this style without adding in the extra hair!)
  4. Bobby pins
  5. Hairspray to keep it all in place

Pro Tips: The key to a longlasting top knot style is grit. Think “hair after a long day at the beach” or “hair that hasn’t been washed for a few days”. We like to use Davines Texturizing Powder coupled with Pureology Sea Mist for a double whammy of staying power. Stay tuned for more from our blogger series. We’ll be featuring your favourite bloggers, Instastars and style gurus alongside our hairstyling team to create the hottest new looks you won’t want to miss.

Style Notes: Nicole is wearing a multi-coloured romper by Lovers + Friends, available at Mendocino for $298, and an ivory mini-dress by Lovers + Friends from Shopbop.
